There’s something incredibly special about designing a garden for a waterfront home. The movement of the water, the coastal light, the architectural lines of the residence, every element plays a role in shaping the outdoor experience. For this recently completed landscape garden design project in Paradise Waters, Surfers Paradise, our goal was to create a refined and timeless garden that felt perfectly at home alongside this stunning architectural residence.
The homeowners had recently completed extensive interior upgrades and wanted the exterior spaces to feel cohesive with the new direction of the home. The existing gardens no longer reflected the sophistication of the property, and the outdoor spaces needed a complete transformation to better support modern family living while celebrating the home’s spectacular waterfront setting.
At Botany Design Co. we believe great landscape design should enhance architecture, not compete with it. This philosophy guided every decision throughout the design process.
designing a timeless garden for modern family living
One of the key priorities for the clients was creating a large, usable backyard lawn area where their young children could play freely. Equally important was preserving uninterrupted water views across the canal, a defining feature of this beautiful Paradise Waters property.
To achieve this balance between functionality and aesthetics, a new engineered retaining wall was constructed along the waterfront edge. Custom curved concrete steps were carefully integrated into the design, creating a seamless transition down to the water while introducing a sculptural architectural feature that feels both elegant and inviting.
The result is a generous open lawn space that feels expansive, calm, and perfectly suited to family life.
a classical plant palette with coastal sophistication
The planting design focused on curating a classical garden palette that would provide timeless elegance throughout the property. Rather than overwhelming the architecture with excessive planting or competing visual elements, we selected refined, textural plant combinations that soften the hardscape and complement the home’s clean architectural lines.
The garden was intentionally designed to feel established, balanced, and enduring: a landscape that will continue to mature beautifully over time.
Large statement pots featuring mature olive trees were introduced throughout key outdoor zones to add structure, softness, and Mediterranean-inspired character. These elements help anchor the spaces visually while bringing warmth and sophistication to the alfresco and poolside areas.
curved forms inspired by water
One of our favourite aspects of this landscape garden design was incorporating subtle curved elements throughout the project to reflect the surrounding waterfront environment.
Rounded paver pathways were designed to mimic the soft movement of water bubbles, gently guiding movement through the garden while creating a sense of flow and calm. These curves also connect beautifully with the sweeping form of the home’s driveway and the custom curved waterfront steps, allowing the entire landscape to feel cohesive and intentionally connected.
It’s often these quieter design gestures that create the strongest emotional response within a garden.
